While many believe that women all over the world now have equality in all job industries or sectors, this may not be true. A report was recently written that was aimed at taking a look into the financial sector with regards to gender equality. Researchers were looking for sex discrimination allegations and generally whether women are being treated the same as men.
The report showed that in the financial services industry, women do very different jobs than men. The financial sector encompasses things such as small financial advisory services, credit unions, banks, insurance companies, building societies, pension funds and many more agencies and companies. From research done into the pay gaps between women and men in this sector, it is possible to see that there are differences on both an annual and an hourly pay basis. Even though there are, for example, a lot of female corporate finance lawyers, that doesn't mean they get the same pay... The bottom line is that there does still exist a widespread gender inequality in the financial services industry as a whole. Women are receiving lower pay than men in many areas.
This topic has been researched and discussed many times over. Women in certain countries still feel that they are not being treated as equally as they should. Many feel that this proves there is a widespread case of discrimination and unfairness in the financial sector. There are even those who are proposing legislation to deal with and alleviate these discrepancies.
In many areas, sexual harassment and unfair treatment regarding salary between men and women are illegal. If a specific employer refuses to hire a women, instead preferring a man for a specific job task or if he or she pays a man more than a woman for performing the exact same job requirements, they can be fined and in many cases spend some time in jail. As long as the man and woman both have the exact same qualifications, there should be no discrimination between the two. In the United States, women began fighting for equality in the workplace in the 1970s. Today however, there are still those who feel women should not be paid as much as men for certain duties. If there is evidence of sexual harassment or inequality in pay, a legal suit could ensue. There have, to date, been thousands of women who have felt that they were being treated unfairly in the workplace. Many of these women made no qualms about taking their employers to court and demanding rather high compensation for these actions.
Many may believe that gender inequality no longer exists in specific industries. The financial sector is certainly not one of them. Although laws are in place, or being put into place in some areas, to protect women from being treated unfairly in the workplace, it may take a while longer before the entire world comes around to this type of belief. Research has shown that inequality still exists in the financial sector between men and women. It goes without saying that there are likely other job industries that still have inequality issues as well.
